Neighborhood

New York City offers a unique backdrop and is an outstanding place to live and to complete a residency.  During this time of your life, time is a precious commodity and the activities you have available within striking distance here are unmatched.  No city rivals New York for excitement, culture, cuisine, and variety.  Within a 1-2 hour drive you can also visit the beaches of Long Island and New Jersey, or go skiing, hiking and camping in the nearby mountains of New York, Pennsylvania and New England.

Briefly, New York City offers: museums (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim, Museum of Natural History and Haden Planetarium), symphony, opera, ballet (Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall), and of course, Broadway.  The United Nations, Rockefeller Center with its annual Christmas tree and seasonal ice skating, Wall Street, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Greenwich Village with its many jazz clubs, are all destinations for tourists from the world over.  For you, they are right on your doorstep, available to you at a moment's notice.  Restaurants in New York are world-class and range from the traditional (French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Steakhouses) to the exotic (Afghan, Thai, Turkish, Hungarian).  Central Park is nearby and offers biking, jogging, skating, horseback riding, or just relaxing.

One of the least appreciated facts about New York City is that it is really an amalgamation of neighborhoods (Greenwich Village, Harlem, Chelsea, Chinatown, Little Italy).  Your neighborhood at Cornell will be the historic Upper East Side.  Not only do you get to live here at an extreme discount (less than $1000-1200), but your family will be safe and comfortable in this exclusive part of town.  The apartments provided are convenient, just across the street, and connected to all the hospitals by a tunnel. This means little of your time is wasted on commuting.  There is no finer place to live during this busy and exciting time of your life.
