Department of Pediatrics

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition

The Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition led by Dr. Marta Illueca  is one of the area's main centers for clinical diagnosis and is the main diagnostic and endoscopic center of Manhattanâs eastside.  International referrals from Latin-America, Europe, Africa and the rest of the world are frequent.

Dr. Illueca directs the Pediatric Endoscopy Unit of the New York Presbyterian Hospital and has a very successful practice.  In addition, Dr. Illueca is very active as a medical liaison to the diplomatic community of the United Nations.   Dr. Elaine Moustafellos  regularly consults at the Hospital for Special Surgery and is developing a Parenteral Nutrition Service.

Pediatric Endoscopy Center:
We offer state-of-the-art endoscopic services to children from birth to adolescence.  Our staff is highly proficient in the management of GI emergencies and we are particularly strong in detecting missed diagnoses among our second opinion referrals.   Our endoscopic experience has an enviable safety track with minimal to no complication rates in the past several years.  Dr. Moustafellos shares the responsibilities for running the Pediatric Endoscopy Suite with Dr. Illueca in addition to running an expanding practice.

Apnea Center:
Within our department, we collaborate with the PICU and NICU as an apnea center, by providing diagnostic services for detecting gastroesophageal reflux by pH probe studies.

RESEARCH
Both Dr. Illueca and Dr. Moustafellos have presented several abstracts in national meetings during the past 2 years.  They are members of the National Association for Pediatric GI & Nutrition, American Gastroenterology Association and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

The followingare just a few of our ongoing studies:
"Matrix Parameters as Markers of Gastroesophageal  Injury  and Response to Zinc"
"Pediatric Intestinal Fibrosis:  Antigen/Tissue Based Monitoring"

EDUCATION
The Division combines clinical excellence with sub-specialty education.

The Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Fellowship at the New York Presbyterian-Cornell University Medical Center is a three-year program, complying with the recently prepared guidelines of the Academy of Pediatrics.  Dr. Illuecaâs dedication to education earned her the "Outstanding Teacher Award" from the 1998 Pediatric Housestaff class.

The first year focuses in developing clinical skills and in preparing research projects that can be implemented during the following two years.  Consultation to all services and a management of the patients admitted by members of the Division constitute the patient source and offer a wide spectrum of the problems and challenges of the subspecialty.  Our fellows and staff interact with over 20 adult GI specialists, providing for one of the most solid endoscopic training programs in the country.
