PGY III Program Requirements:

Outpatient Department:
  1. Psychopharmacology Clinic and Supervision - 8-9 hours/wk. (Friedman)
  2. Evaluation Service: Residents must be available during block time Wednesday or Thursday afternoons. One of these afternoons will be spent teaching third year medical students psychiatric evaluation (Stein, Dollard).
  3. Long Term Therapy: Each resident must treat at least 3 adult long term therapy patients with supervision and metasupervision. (Auchincloss, and metasupervisors: Samberg,Kelly, Welner, Schein).
  4. Brief Therapy: Residents must take the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy module (Fishman) treating 2 patients x 12 weeks each and attending CBT supervisory rounds (Monday 3-4). Each resident must also treat 1-2 patients in IPT x 12 weeks each and attend IPT supervision. All residents must treat a total of 4 completed brief treatment in 3rd and 4th years.
  5. Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Resident must serve on Child and Adolescent Evaluation Service and attend child conferences (Monday 12:15 - 12:45). Every resident must treat one child/adolescent long term case with supervision. (Hertzig). Each resident will have a small case load of child psychopharm patients, who, if possible, should be scheduled during Monday/Tuesday Child Evaluation Clinic time.
  6. Group Therapy Program: Every resident will be assigned a group and group supervisor. (Wachter)
  7. Family Therapy: Each resident must treat one family/couple with supervision in the PGY III or IV year) (Alger, Sander).
  8. Partial Hospital Program ¬ each resident must serve in the partial hospital program (Wirth) x one month.
  9. Residents should see 70 pt. visits/month in PGY III year. Failure meet these visit targets will result in increased case load.
  10. Emergency Room (Sombrotto, Hird) et al. Night float as per schedule
Requirements for all PGY III Residents:
  1. Attendance and participation in all block time curriculum activities, case conferences, summer curriculum and supervision.
  2. On-call duties
  3. Grand Rounds and M&M Conferences
  4. E-group
  5. PRITE exam.
  6. Mini-boards (formal observed interviewing).
  7. Psychotherapy skills test
  8. Maintenance of the psychotherapy log
  9. Maintenance of patient log and all charts.
  10. Medical student teaching. (Supervisor: J. Polan, S. Stein). During half of their evaluation service time, all PGY III’s on outpatient services will be paired with up to 2 third year medical students on their primary care rotation during half of their evaluation service time. They are responsible for interviewing a case with the student, teaching and reviewing the students’ write-ups.
  11. Preliminary research proposals for PGY IV year are due by May 15, 2005.
  12. Daily work hour monitoring.

Evaluation
:
Residents will be evaluated by supervisors, division chiefs, senior residents medical students. They will meet twice yearly with Director of Residency Training to review these evaluations, results of PRITE examination, and mini-boards evaluations. Residents will be asked to evaluate their supervisors and division chiefs and course instructors. These evaluations will be processed through the Residency Education Office
