The New York Hospital Voice and Speech Center The Voice and Speech Center at the Cornell campus of The New York Presbyterian Hospital is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of all disorders involving the larynx. This encompasses all speech, voice, swallowing and upper airway disorders. A multidisciplinary team interviews, examines and reviews all cases presenting to the Voice and Speech Center and an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan is formulated by the team. Intervention is varied and may include therapy, medical intervention and/or surgical intervention. The team includes an Otolaryngologist with specialty training in Laryngology, a Voice Scientist and Speech Language Pathologists. Board certified surgeons skilled in microlaryngoscopy and phonomicrosurgery, laryngeal framework surgery and head and neck oncology are involved in the center. Microlaryngoscopy and phonomicrosurgery is performed to remove vocal fold nodules, polyps, cysts and other lesions that affect the voice. Laryngeal framework surgery is performed to treat a voice and/or swallowing problem that is secondary to vocal fold paralysis or other laryngeal trauma. Head and neck oncology procedures range from limited endoscopic procedures to major ablative procedures with tissue reconstruction. Speech language pathologists with expertise in speech, voice and swallowing disorders as well as voice rehabilitation after larynx cancer surgery are available for therapy. Speech language pathologists with a background in the performing arts are also available to provide therapy. The equipment and techniques available for the assessment of speech, voice, swallowing, or airway disorders is state-of-the-art. Assessment techniques include digital flexible and rigid strobolaryngoscopy, voice recordings, and electroglottography, acoustic and aerodynamic measurements, electromyography and FEESST (Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing). Additionally, radiographic studies such as a CT scan, MRI, modified barium swallow are available when indicated. Consultative services are extensive and include Medicine, Neurology and Pulmonary.
