Millennium Lecture Series Exploring the Impact of Genetics and Molecular Biology in the 21st Century Concludes (May 16 & 23)—The special lecture series addressing the theme Revolutionizing Medicine in the 21st Century: The Impact of Genetics and Molecular Biology  (sponsored by Weill Cornell Medical College, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and the American Museum of Natural History) concludes with two lectures on  May 16 and 23 (both on Tuesday).  On May 16, Weill Cornell’s Dr. Ronald Crystal, Director of the Institute of Genetic Medicine, will speak on the topic "Gene Therapy Enters Adolescence: Progress and Issues." The final lecture in the series will be presented by Dr. Samuel Waksal, President and CEO of ImClone Systems, Inc., who will speak about "Generating New Cells, New Organs: Stem Cell Research and Applications" on May 23. The lectures will be held at the American Museum of Natural History, 79th Street and Central Park West, Main Auditorium, 7:00-8:30 pm.  Customary Museum fees apply: $12 per lecture ($10 for Museum members, students, and senior citizens). Community Health & Wellness Seminars (May 16 & 23)—New York Weill Cornell’s Office of Public Affairs concludes its spring seminar series with the following topics: "Lose Weight for Life: Treatments with Medications & Surgery" (May 16), held at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House Auditorium (331 East 70th St.); and "Take Heart: Coronary Disease, Treatment Alternatives & Cardiac Rehabilitation" (May 23), held in Uris Auditorium, 1300 York Avenue (at 69th St.). Seminars will begin at 7:00 p.m. and are free and open to the public.  For more information, call 821-0888.


"State of the Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences" (May 17)—Dr. Antonio Gotto, Dean of Weill Medical College, will present a report on the "State of the Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences" on Wednesday, May 17, at 5 pm in Uris Auditorium. All are invited to attend and to join Dr. and Mrs. Gotto for refreshments immediately following the lecture in the Griffis Faculty Club.


Minority Visiting Professorship Program (May 15-17)—The Department of Public Health, in conjunction with the Center for Multicultural and Minority Health, presents the Minority Visiting Professorship Program.  Minority Visiting Professor Dr. Joan Reede, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard Medical School, will be on hand for the three-day series of lectures, seminars, and informal discussion with residents, students, public health specialists, and faculty.  For more information, see Calendar below.


The Class of 2000 International Fellows Reception (May 18)—Alumni and friends of the International Fellows Program are invited to meet the third and fourth-year students.  The students, who participated in projects in a variety of countries all over the world, will receive certificates and then present pictorial displays of their experiences. Guests are invited to attend a reception at 5:00 p.m. in the Archbold Commons, where they can meet the students, view their displays, and partake of refreshments. Weill Cornell Team in AIDS Walk NY (May 21)—Weill Cornell medical students have formed a team to participate in AIDS Walk NY in Central Park on Sunday, May 21, for the benefit of programs sponsored by the Gay Men’s Health Crisis organization. Staff and faculty are welcome to join the Weill Cornell team. Walkers can register on the web at www.aidswalk.net (choose the "Cornell Medical College" team name when asked). Convocation and Commencement (May 25)—Convocation and Commencement ceremonies for Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences will be held on Thursday, May 25. The day will start with separate Convocation ceremonies on campus. Convocation for Weill Medical College will be held at 10:00 am in Uris Auditorium. Convocation for the Graduate School of Medical Sciences will be held at 10:30 am in the Weill Auditorium. The schools’ joint Commencement ceremonies will take place at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall at 3:00 pm (by invitation only). 


The Roy C. Swan Lecture in Biomedical Sciences (May 31)—Dr. Jeffrey Borer, Chief, the Division of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, and the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, will deliver The Roy C. Swan Lecture in Biomedical Sciences entitled "Effects of the Extraterrestrial Environment on Cardiovascular Pathophysiology" in Weill Auditorium (C-2) on Wednesday, May 31, at 5 p.m. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Cell Biology.


A Quarter Century Landmark Plus! Update Your Medicine June 2000 Course (June 26-30)—Sponsored by the Weill Medical College and the Association of Practicing Physicians of The New York Hospital, the Update Your Medicine Program presents a practical CME course—including lectures, workshops, and Meet-the-Professor luncheons. (37.50 Category I AMA-PRA credit.)  Additional 11.5 credits available for Hands-on Workshops.  This program has also been reviewed and is acceptable for 37.50 elective hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians.  For further information, contact Dr. Lila Wallis, Director, or Debora Laan, Coordinator, at 746-4752; website: www.med.cornell.edu/update.your.medicine.


State-Mandated Infection Control and Child Abuse Courses—The state-mandated Infection Control and Child Abuse Courses required for licensure in New York State are offered regularly by the School of Continuing Education for Nurses, New York Weill Cornell Center.  The schedule for 2000 is: Infection Control Update: May 18, June 8, July 20, Aug. 3, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Dec. 7; Infection Control Core Course: June 8, Aug. 3, Oct. 19, Dec. 7; Child Abuse Course: July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 28, Nov. 9. All classes are held in Nursing Education, Payson House Sub-basement. The fee is $35.00.
