Diabetes Community Symposium (Nov. 15)—Weill Medical
College will host a community symposium, in conjunction with National Diabetes
Month, entitled "The Latest Advances in the Treatment of Diabetes" from
7 to 9 pm in Uris Auditorium. Topics will include: "New Therapies
for the Treatment of Insulin Resistance" (Dr. Leonid Poretsky); "Pancreas
Transplantation" (Dr. Milan Kinkhabwala); "Treatment for Diabetic Eye Disease"
(Dr. Vincent Repucci); "Insulin Pump Therapy" (Dr. David Brillon); and
"Therapy of the Future: Inhaled Insulin" (Dr. Judity Hey-Hadavi).
Admission is free, but limited to the first 250 people on a first-come,

Rockefeller University Centennial Lecture (Nov. 17)—Rockefeller
University kicks off its Centennial Lecture Series on November 17 with
Dr. Lee Silver of Princeton University speaking on "The Science and Politics
of Genetic Enhancement in the Third Millennium: Who Will Decide the Future
of Humankind?" The lecture begins at 7 pm in Rockefeller's Caspary Auditorium.
Dr. Silver is author of the book Remaking Eden: How Genetic Engineering
and Cloning Will Transform the American Family. All are welcome. For reservations,

Memorial Service (Nov. 19)—The Fifth Annual Center-wide
Memorial Service at New York Weill Cornell Center will be held at 12:00
pm in Uris Auditorium. Organized by the Department of Pastoral Care and
Education, the Memorial Service celebrates the lives of co-workers, volunteers,
and retirees of both the Hospital and the Medical College at New York Weill
Cornell who have died during the past year.
Support Group for Caregivers (Starts Nov. 23)—The
Caregivers Service at New York Weill Cornell is pleased to announce that
a new daytime drop-in support group for caregivers will meet on Tuesdays
from 12 to 1:30 pm, starting on November 23. In addition, a new bereavement
group is seeking members and will begin shortly. These are in addition
to caregiver support groups that already meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

HealthOutreach Lecture (Nov. 29)—"The Ins and Outs
of Homecare: What Caregivers Need to Know" is the topic of a lecture to
be held from 6:30 to 8 pm in A-250. Reservations are required. Please call

Caregivers Service.
"Day of Art" (Dec. 3)—The Auxiliary and HealthOutreach
programs at New York Weill Cornell are co-hosting "A Day of Art," featuring
an exhibition of original masterpieces painted by HealthOutreach art students.
The paintings have been reproduced on note cards, which will be available
for sale for the benefit of the HealthOutreach program. The event takes
place in the main hospital lobby, 11 am to 4 pm. After the event, cards
can be purchased at the HealthOutreach office at 1325 York Ave. (between
70th and 71st streets). Sponsored by New York-Presbyterian Hospital, HealthOutreach
is a free membership program for individuals age 65 and older. For more

OSHA In-Service Training (Dec. 8 - Dec. 16)—The
following educational sessions are being offered as part of the continuing
in-service training on Health and Safety regulations on the Medical College's
Chemical Hygiene Plan and Bloodborne Exposure Plan. Chemical Hygiene Plan:
Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2:00-4:00 pm. Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Plan:
Thursday, Dec. 16, 2:00-4:00 pm. All sessions will be held in A-950.
Participation in one session per year is mandatory under Federal (OSHA)
regulations for all laboratory workers, including graduate students, medical
students and postdoctoral fellows as well as their faculty supervisors,
who work with chemicals or with human blood as well as other potentially
infectious materials.
Tri-Institutional Chronic Disease Conference (Dec.
9)—Weill Medical College, Rockefeller University, and The American
Heart Association-New York City will host "The Third International Conference
on Fats and Oil Consumption: Prevention of Chronic Disease" from 8:30 am
to 5:30 pm (7-9 am general registration) at Rockefeller University, 66th
St. Gate. Admission is $60 ($30 for students). Contact Rachel

State-Mandated Infection Control and Child Abuse Courses—The
State-Mandated Infection Control Core Course, Infection Control Update,
and Child Abuse Courses required for licensure in New York State are offered
regularly by the School of Continuing Education for Nurses, New York Weill
Cornell Center. The schedule for the remainder of 1999 is: Infection Control
Core Course (December 2) and Infection Control Update (November 18 and
December 9). All classes are held in the Nursing Education Department,
Payson House Sub-basement. The fee is $35. Preregistration is suggested,
as seating is limited. Registration/check-in is at 5:00 pm, and classes
start at 5:30 pm. To register, stop by the School, in the Payson House

Doctor’s Coatroom Computer Training Initiative—The
Hospital's Office of Organizational Learning will be conducting training
on hospital-supported computer applications: Eclipsys, CISyphus, Imnet
EPRS, PACS, Infonet (Intranet), and e-mail in the newly renovated Doctor’s
Coatroom, when the coatroom reopens in November. A schedule of times
that instructors will be available in the Doctor’s Coatroom will be posted
in the temporary Coatroom on Greenberg 3 and in the newly renovated coatroom
when it reopens. If the posted times are not convenient, physicians
may request alternate times that are more convenient via a sign-up sheet
in the Doctor’s Coatroom or by calling the Office of Organizational Learning

Volunteers Needed for Clinical Research Studies Concerning
Bone Density in Women and Atherosclerosis in Men and Women—The Rogosin
Institute Comprehensive Lipid Control Center is conducting two studies
involving cholesterol-lowering drugs. One study is investigating the potential
benefits of cholesterol-lowering drugs on bone density in postmenopausal
women age 60 or older whose cholesterol is greater than 200 mg/dL. The
other study, of both men and women, is investigating factors beyond cholesterol
that may be involved in atherosclerosis. Volunteers must be age 35-65 and
have cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dL. Each study also has additional

Volunteers Needed for Diabetic Neuropathy Research
Trials—Physicians in the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience are
seeking patients with peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes to participate
in ongoing research of the safety and efficacy of the investigational drug
thiotic acid. The study is sponsored by ASTA Medica. For more

Breast Cancer Support and Information Groups Forming—Two
new resources for women with breast cancer are being offered free of charge
at New York Weill Cornell Center. One is an ongoing weekly support group
open to women with newly diagnosed breast cancer who are undergoing treatment
or who have recently completed treatment. The second resource is a bi-weekly
preoperative patient teaching session offered to women scheduled for breast
cancer surgery. Individual counseling is also available. For further information,

at 746-4347.
Flu Shots for Employees—Employees at New York Weill
Cornell Center may receive flu shots at the Occupational Health Service,
Stich Medical Building (1315 York Ave.), mezzanine level, on an express
basis and without an appointment through February 25, 2000, at the following
times: Monday - Friday (8 - 11:30 am); Monday - Wednesday, Friday (1 -
4 pm). In addition, OHS will offer flu shots at the following locations:
Hospital Main Lobby: November 16 (8:30 - 11:30 am); November 17 (11 am
- 2 pm); November 18 (1 - 4 pm); November 19 (8:30 - 11:30 am). Garden
Cafe: November 30 (8:30 - 11:30 am); December 1 (11 am - 2 pm); December
2 (1 - 4 pm); December 3 (8:30 - 11:30 am). Please present your plastic
clinic plate to receive services.
Update Your Medicine (1999-2000 CME Lecture Series)—The
lecture series sponsored by Weill Medical College and the Association of
Practicing Physicians of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital continues on
November 17 with "Update Cardiology II." Dr. Robert Campagna will present
"Unstable Angina," and Dr. Stephen Scheidt will present "New Cardiac Pharmacology."
Topics for the remainder of the series are "Update Neurology" (January
26), "Update Science and Art in Medicine: (1) Alternative Medicine and
(2) Evidence Based Medicine" (February 26), "Update Rheumatology" (March
15), "Update Gastroenterology" (April 19), and "Update Miscellaneous: (1)
