Overview

Located on the upper eastside of Manhattan at 68th Street and York Avenue, our institution is at the center of the world's foremost biomedical research and patient care centers. Collaborations with neighboring institutions such as The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and The Hospital for Special Surgery  ensure the latest treatments are options for our patients.

We have a long and distinguished history:

ð The world's first center for the study and care of premature infants (1949)
ð Establishment of one of the first pediatric cardiology diagnostic and treatment centers in the world
ð Pioneering work in Cooley's anemia, leading to the opening of the first ambulatory transfusion clinic
ð The Child Life Program, pioneered in the 1940s, offers activities geared to the social, emotional and education needs of the young patient.  Children are given the opportunity to continue normal development as well as to recuperate from the emotional and physical effects of illness.
ð The first pediatric AIDS Comprehensive Care Center designated by the New York State Department of Health
ð The first Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in New York City specifically designed and constructed for the needs of critically ill children (1985)
ð Promotion of a major literacy program in New York City, Heads Up!  Children Read, Listen and Learn." (1997)

ð We have more than 75 full time faculty members who participate in general inpatient and subspecialty care, resident and fellow education and research.
