The goal of The Division of Pediatric Neurology, under Division Chief Dr. Abe Chutorian, is to foster continued excellence in patient care, teaching, and research.

CLINICAL PROGRAMS
Our physicians have unparalleled expertise in the understanding and treatment of cerebral, spinal and neuromuscular disorders.

We currently treat patients with a wide range of disorders, for example:

  • seizure disorders such as epilepsy;
  • movement disorders such as Tourette Sydrome;
  • language dysfunction syndromes such as Landau Klefner Syndrome.

  • With support from the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, Dr. Syed A. Hosain has  develop a strong Pediatric Epilepsy Program  which is  major referral center for vagus nerve implants (new treatment for epilepsy).  We have already performed more implants than any other major institute in the metropolitan area.

    ð Dr. Abe Chutorian continues to investigate the efficacy of corticosteroid therapy in Landau Klefner and related language dysfunction syndromes.

    Dr. Hosain has numerous ongoing studies on various treatments of seizure disorders.

    EDUCATION
    The fellowship training program in pediatric neurology is central to the educational goals of the division.  The fellows, who participate in the education of rotating neurology and pediatric residents, are expected to become expert in the clinical care of children with acute and chronic cerebral, spinal and neuromuscular disorders.

    Fellows also expect to become familiar with the scientific foundation of child neurology, to which end they acquire a knowledge of electrophysiologic procedures such as electroencephalography, of psychometric and behavioral analysis, and of a variety of imaging procedures including CT and MRI.

    Each fellow is expected to conduct at least one clinical research project during the training period, whether bench research or a clinical project under the supervision of staff members.

    Fellows are encouraged to acquire special expertise in one of these basic areas by additional training after completion of the program, and most have chosen to do so, and to conduct part time or full time clinical research or to become clinician-teachers in an academic setting.
