The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (DHHP) at New York Presbyterian Hospital, the Payne Whitney Clinic, offers a variety of mental health services for all age groups and with any degree of hearing loss. These programs for the deaf and hard of hearing and family members provide a continuum of care at the hospital's outpatient department, on inpatient units, in day treatment and rehabilitation programs.

STAFF

Treatment teams include clinical social workers, who are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and trained to work with deaf and hard of hearing people; psychiatrists; qualified psychiatric sign language interpreters, and rehabilitation therapists.

OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT SERVICES
  • Comprehensive evaluations
  • Medication evaluations and monitoring
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Family psychotherapy
  • Couples psychotherapy groups
  • Group services may include:
    • Deaf mother's group
    • Hearing children of deaf parents group
    • Men's group
    • Hard of hearing adjustment and support
    • HIV/AIDS support group

SPECIALTY OUTPATIENT SERVICES

Treatment is conducted with deafness trained clinicians ASL fluent from the DHHP. All are also accessible through the use of sign language interpreters:

  • Adult Day Treatment Program
  • Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services
  • Partial Hospital Programs
WORK/COMMUNICATION SKILLS PROGRAM

This rehabilitation program, conducted in ASL, helps deaf and hard of hearing individuals with psychiatric problems prepare to enter the job market through the development of communication, language and social skills related to the workplace.

INPATIENT PROGRAMS

The treatment team includes deafness trained ASL fluent clinicians from the DHHP. Inpatient programs at the hospital are also made accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people through the use of sign language interpreters.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Managed care plans, other insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and private pay are accepted.
