Recent research has shown the best possible recovery in schizophrenia is achieved when one team is responsible for all treatment.  For this reason, the Schizophrenia Disorders Program (SDP) emphasizes continuity of care throughout the course of treatment.  Comprehensive evaluation and treatment are provided at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division for individuals with psychotic disorders.

CONTINUITY OF CARE

SDP Outpatient Service

Individuals recovering from acute exacerbations of schizophrenia do best when they have the opportunity to stay in touch with their treatment team for an extended period of time.  In the outpatient service, individuals remain under the care of their primary clinician.  Treatment is highly individualized and includes ongoing psychiatric care and rehabilitation.  The lowest effective doses of antipsychotic medications are identified and supplemented by individual and group therapies, with the goal of managing symptoms and enhancing life in the community.

SDP Day Treatment Program

Provides five-day-per-week intensive outpatient services for individuals who experience persistent and disabling symptoms of schizophrenia.  Individual treatment goals focus on the development of symptom management and community reintegration skills through training and support groups.  Patients receive treatment from attending psychiatrists who are specialists in the treatment of psychotic disorders.

SDP Inpatient Service

Treats patients with severe relapses and /or medical complications related to schizophrenia and other chronic psychotic conditions, especially those with persistent and refractory symptoms.  Intensive pharmacologic and psychosocial management are provided in a safe and non-stressful environment, with the goals of achieving symptom stabilization and timely discharge to outpatient care.  The continuum of care approach is important during this stage of treatment.  Those patients who are being referred to the Day Treatment Program have an opportunity to attend groups in the program which leads to an easier transition and improves compliance.

SPECIALIZED SERVICES

A variety of other services and protocols is available within the SDP, including new medications and treatments for schizophrenia and related disorders.  A research team explores cognition, brain functioning and imaging, and social adjustment.
