Radiographic images of a 60 year old man with cirrhosis
and intractable ascites who was treated with a transjugular intrahepatic
portosystemic shunt (TIPS).
The
division of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) at New York-Presbyterian
Hospital-Cornell Campus (NYP) is responsible for all angiography and vascular
interventions (except neurological and cardiac angiography), as well as
all percutaneous gastrointestinal, genitourinary and image directed interventions
at at our site and at the Hospital for Special Surgery. We are also responsible
for all MR angiograms of the aorta and of the peripheral vasculature. There
are 7 full time fellowship trained CVIR attendings at NYP one of which
is a full time MR angiographer.
The
division possesses three Phillips Integres V-3000 angiography rooms , an
ATL Ultramark 5000 and Biosound color Doppler ultrasound units. The physical
plant includes a dedicated 8 bed recovery room with full time nursing coverage.
There is an additonal General Electric angiography room and an additional
General Electric tilt table flouroscopy room with angiographic capabilities
which is shared with the division of Neuroradiology. New office space for
the faculty, fellows, technical and nursing staff and our secretaries are
on teh same floor. CT interventional procedures are performed on a GE Advantage
helical scanner located one floor above our division. MR and CT angiography
are performed by members of the division in our inpatient and outpatient
sites. The hospital uses a Kodak PACS and Powerscibe voice to text dictation
systems. There is currently money set aside for the procurement of an Interventional
MR. The hospital and department patient data files are currently computerized.
In addition, the division maintains its own database of cases which can
be used for research, clinical practice and to maintain case logs. The
division has a full time Physicians assistant.
We
currently have four fellows for a one-year clinical fellowship. Each fellow
rotates to MSKCC for a three months over the course of the year. The Memorial-Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is a major affiliate of the New York Hospital-Cornell
Medical Center. The four full time fellowship trained members of the CVIR
faculty at MSKCC holds academic appointments at the Weill Medical College
of Cornell University. They are responsible for non-neurologic and cardiac
angiography and interventions as well as as well as all percutaneous biliary,
genitourinary and abscess image directed interventions. MSKCC is an internationally
respected center for the care of patients with neoplastic diseases. The
CVIR exposure at MSKCC is an excellent complement to that received at NYP.
In the last year, the division performed 3600 catheter based and biopsy
procedures. The division has a new GE Advantac and a Phillips I 2000 angiography
rooms. It also has a GE 9800 CT and a Diasonics ultrasound full time.
There
are four weeks of vacation, time off for interviews, and up to $1,000 and
one week to provide for presentations at one of the major academic meetings.
The fellows at NYP participate in a divisional work/academic conference
five mornings each week. In addition, there is a combined NYP-MSKCC CVIR
conference twice a month at which the fellows rotate to present topics
of interest to them for discussion. Each fellow is expected to complete
a research project; some of the combined NYP-MSKCC meetings review the
progress of this work. At NYP, a combined vascular surgery and radiology
conference is held each week and the fellows present cases to this conference
every week. Other conferences include a MRA research conference (every
other week), GI medicine/surgery conference, GU conference and hypertension
medicine conference. At MSKCC, fellow participate in a weekly multidisciplinary
Hepatobiliary conference.
